After my TH400 lost 2nd gear last year, I parked it for the whole rest of the year. I had the tranny pulled apart just last week and found out the race had been ripped off the steel drum.

We're replacing a couple things this time around. I'm going to try running a Pro Torque converter and an Aluminum Drum.

Anyone have any recommendations / suggestions.

Chris.

Chris....I would HIGHLY recommend you call Marty chance at Neil Chance converters, and get a bolt together, call me and I'll give you the setup you want.....it's a bit more money, but TRUST me....it's worth every penny!

Thanks Jason,

I've already purchased the Pro Torque converter. We'll see how it goes. I decided on an aluminum drum even though I know it wears out rather quickly. I just don't want to lose a leg.

Thanks for your advice Larry.

I would put a blanket around the trans for sure....I have one! I don't want you to lose a leg either!:) Let me know after that converter doesn't do what you want...I'll help you with a good one!:)

I've heard from over 50 people that Neil Chance converters are the best, and the most expensive.

What is a bolt together?

Anyway, one dude said he paid $2,000-$2,500 for a Chance converter and it put his pro stocker and went from 10.2 to 9.4 with no other changes. Thats just what he told me...

Damn... That's a serious improvement. Of course there could also be other factors. I'll see how this Pro Torque one does against my other converter. I'm sure I will see some improvement as it will be a bit tighter.

I think it's going to be tough. Your other converter works very well with the power you are running.

The other converter was too loose. My best MPH was 138mph with it and the rpms never changed as I drove it down the track. I think that converter would work better for a motor that made more power above 8,000rpm. It also made so much heat that it pulled the race off the drum. I think it was great for launching, but at the top end it needed more power and rpms to get it to come anywhere close to hooking up.

IF your converter isn't allowing the engine to acclerate, it's too loose. I.E. your engine is making more power than the converter can control. When are you going to have that thing back on the road?

Hopefully by the end of this week. The drum is coming in on Monday.

The engine goes to 7500 upon launch, then never drops below it again. I shift at 8200rpm and the engine drops to around 7500. I do this twice. Down the track it sounds like I never shift. I just think the converter is slipping way too much and it never seems to come close to a 1:1 ratio. We'll see how the new one does.

I'm curious to see how the new one does keep us posted.

I have a ProTorque 9" that they set up for a Supra with large turbo, and it has worked out pretty well. It was slightly too loose at first, then I had it tightened just a bit. My RPM's drop to around 6000 when I shift, I shift at ~7700 or so. I can spool a PT72GTQ without nitrous (altho it takes a little longer than I'd like). It spools my GT42 with a little shot of nitrous no problem.

Nice!! I'm hoping to have a similar RPM range. I probably have the same exact converter. I have nitrous to spool the turbo so it's not really a problem if it's on the tight side. I'm getting the tranny back today and the car should be running next week.

I need all kinds of low budget solutions this car of mine has so many things wrong with it.
