: How strong is the automatic in the Supra's?

I have an automatic from a donor car and a whole car that I swapped parts from. I hate to just let it sit though. I was wondering just how strong the auto tranny is. I know they come in the turbo supra's and there must be a few of you out there who have added a little more power to the engine. I wouldn't mind an automatic with a turbo because of staying in the power band during shifts. I have missed shifts occasionally with my 5 speed and it doesn't feel too good. I know there is a rev limiter with the car, but still..............

Anyway I would appreciate any info on that and with the overdrive in this transmission, how many gears are there? Is it a 4 speed and overdrive in the top gear or what?

Thanks

Russ

I like shifting so don't get me wrong about that, but I am curious about the auto trans.

With quality fluid and a real transmission cooler, the MK3 auto should hold 300-350rwhp. How long depends on how hard you drive it (and how often). My automatic died after 2 years of hard use (yet religious maintainence). Level 10 and Sound Performance both offer upgrades to help it hold up to 400+, but their life is fairly short if you plan on doing serious drag racing. Most guys will either convert to a manual or a few have swapped in GM transmissions

Thanks! That was the kind of reply I was hoping for. The car would be used mostly for street driving, but with the same occasional heavy driving foot that I use in my manual/NA. So it might last a bit longer, enough to sell it once I get it that far.

Thanks again

Well my ultimate goal is to own a nice 91 or 92 Turbo supra with 5 speed, and if I sell that and the one I am currently driving, I can find one and buy it. Long range goals of course, but hoping.

Seems like OutofStep ran 10's with the A340E. Or did he switch trans?

If that is true, then it sounds pretty strong to me. Be nice to find out for sure.

Thanks

I posted this in another Forum
If anyone in Southern California runs an Auto and needs a robust rebuild give Bill at Cres-O-Matic in Hawaiian Gardens, CA a call. He has over 30 years experience with nothing but Autos and many folks in the area think of him the guru of aotomatic transmissions. He has told me the auto in the Supra is one stout unit once its rebulit with quality parts. He also welcomes calls for info.

Well that convinces me then. If I do find that turbo that I want and it happens to be an automatic, then I won't hesitate to buy just because of that. Thanks a lot Suprageezer.
