: the new irs 6-speed record
apx632 11-21-2005, 12:47 PM here's a vid for you guys. although i'm sure most have seen it on sf. but figured i'd post it over here for anyone who hasn't.

1BADSUPRA 11-22-2005, 06:54 PM That is NOT a 6spd IRS record....Shepherd went 7.97! That is the current manual trans record, as well as IRS!
ChrisB 11-22-2005, 08:41 PM Damn, that Viper has some power. Major MPH.
Chris.

ok umm for one thing..shep doesn't use a 6-speed, never has considering the car never came with one. 2 its a race car not a street car which is what that viper is holding the record for. so that's my fault for not posting "street car" in the title of the thread. and aside from that shep's car is a race car and is awd not rwd.
Saad Saad 11-22-2005, 10:57 PM Why is Johns car not a street car? Because its fast?
apx632 11-22-2005, 11:00 PM Why is Johns car not a street car? Because its fast?
prolly cause i seriously doubt its street driven anymore. i know it use to be quite a bit. and why not to take anything away from john..but why was he brought up? his car has never once had a 6-speed in it to begin with. he simply is the fastest awd dsm...and fastest manually shifted car in the world..irs live axle or indifferent. and this particular viper is the 6-speed irs street car record holder is all.
Saad Saad 11-22-2005, 11:11 PM 4speed 5speed 6speed 7speed, the point is that it is a factory manual trans. If you think that John does not take that car out on the street you are mistaken. They both have Tilton clutches and the factory engines and transmissions that came with the car. Why is one car a street car and the other not? They are set up the same, are they not?

i thought john got rid of the factory 5-speed and has some 4-speed dog box in the car? or is it still his 5-speed with a dog gear set in it? that's what i was never completely clear on with his transmission. only thing i know is he still uses a clutch..and i've only seen 1 other person on video that shifts as fast as he does still using a clutch.
Saad Saad 11-22-2005, 11:32 PM John has the factory trans in his car. If you think that John shifts that car fast then you do not know what fast is. If you watch his in car vids it looks like he is taking his sweet ass time getting that car down the track:)

heh...i have seen in car vids of him. i have 3 in car vids of him actually. u should mount a camera inside ur car..i'd be very interested in watching how you row through the gears.

From what I hear the Viper is dog boxed, and the rear axles have been modified and the rear end has been modified. Bet if someone did that to a supra they would run real close to the viper. Please correct me if im wrong but I do not think any of the full weight 6 speed supra's have done any of that.....yet.
1BADSUPRA 11-23-2005, 09:36 AM Do you guys even know what a dog box is???? Johns trans is a factory trans with internal mods (dog box). You can, and he does, still drive the car on the street just the same. NO ONE is claiming the record is anything but a "6spd record" not a "daily driven 6spd record" not a "100% stock 6spd street driven, yellow car with two seats and a 8.4 liter v10 blah blah blah record". John Shepherds car is plain and simple the fastest manual trans, clutch shifted car on the planet....period...no matter how you slice it. He lifts to shift 100% on EVERY gear change down to zero% throttle, uses the clutch, and babies the car out of the hole. I have the logs of nearly every single pass he has made in the car over the past 8 years or so. There is ONLY one record for this, and it is Johns.....a little 4 cylinder 2.0 liter Mitsubishi AWD, not a Viper, not a Supra......a TALON!
BTW, I know for a FACT that John still drives his car from time to time, becuase I get logs from him making pulls on the road in front of his house, and being chased by the cops on numerous occasions!:)

please understand i was not trying to down play him at all. and yes i do know that he still uses a clutch to shift...i've watched his 7 second pass vid many times. just most people myself included thought he didn't street drive the car cause there's no radiator..or intercooler from what i can see of underhood shots. my guess is its cause he runs methonal that he's able to do it. would i be correct with that assumption?

He absolutely still has a radiator, just not a conventional one, and why do you need an intercooler to drive the car on the street? Alot of factory turbo cars in the 80's came with no intercooler. Yes John now runs methanol, and that makes him able to run with no intercooler... The car still drives around in the pits...no tow to the lanes, no tow back...So let's all be clear about "the record" John has it, and it's 6 tenths quicker than anyone else!:)

i think we can all agree upon something. this record that the viper holds..should really be titled 6-speed irs "RWD" street car record. cause a lot of people debate about why sheperd isn't mentioned when talking about irs records. and i fully agree with you..he holds THE record for manual irs cars no questions asked. and please understand my comment about the radiator was made based on a pic i saw..which was not a great one. it was at an angle that just made the car look like it had no radiator and obviously no intercooler.

i've never personally read a lot of in depth info about the viper in the vid. i don't doubt the tranny and rear end were modified..cause neither one stock is near strong enough to hold up to the power level.
1BADSUPRA 11-24-2005, 01:09 PM I am not one for "breaking down" records. The Supra community is famous for records with this and that, stock cams, or stock trans, or stock paint, or stock seats....blah....blah...blah. John holds the record for the quickest and fastest manual trans car...never mind the fact that it is IRS, or solid axle, rwd, fwd, or awd.....doesn't matter. If you guys want to break down the records just so a supra is included everytime, go ahead.....I really don't want any part of it. If I wanted to break down records, I probably hold a half a dozen of them with my supra...but I just don't see the point. :)
These records are stated as "6spd records" where exactly is the technicality....Shepherd is a 5spd??? B.S. Plain and simple this is NO record for anything other than a viper. Keep it there!
The way I see it...
Fastest manual trans car , and fastest DSM - John Shepherd
Fastest Manual trans/auto trans Supra - Paul Efantis
Fastest Maual trans Viper - UGR
Fastest Auto VIper - Heffner

i don't really care about breaking down a record so a supra fits into it. i don't have a supra..and don't favor over to them. i like the cars a lot but not that much. and yeah i'm sure ur right about ur supra prolly holding a few records. i'm sure u prolly are the fastest supra to use a footbrake still. and too be honest why most people break apart 5 and 6-speed records is a lil dumb to me. most of the time no matter what they only run through 4 gears anyways.
ChrisB 11-24-2005, 09:50 PM I have the fastest stock block Supra, Race Tech seat w/head restraint Supra on the planet. :)

Was that with or without the decals on the car???:)
ChrisB 11-25-2005, 12:51 PM with decals. It's a lot tougher getting down the track with decals due to the increased drag coefficient. Not to mention the extra 1/10 lb added to the weight of the car.
Chris.

Well, in drag racing, awd cars run in the rwd class. So I would say that John has the record for an IRS manually shifted street car. The only argument that anyone has against this would be the fact that he is on Menthonal. But even if you only count his gasoline runs he has still gone faster then 8.55. If you think about what he has done it is very impressive. In my oppinion the Viper record will be getting much quicker in the near future.

heh i didn't even think about that. people can argue about the methonal all they want. but i've heard of people driving cars on the street using alky.
ChrisB 11-26-2005, 06:45 PM People have also run Nitro-Methane on the street. It's a bit loud, but I've heard of people doing it.
