: Clutch for MKIII turbo
oceanfire0 11-19-2005, 12:55 PM My '87 Turbo is about ready to need a new clutch, and while I'm doing that, I'd really like to put a lightweight flywheel in as well. My problem, however, is that I have a budget of about $500. By the time summer hits, I should have the money to start giving it more hp, so I'd like something that can handle significantly more power and torque. I've been looking around Horsepowerfreaks.com, and have found ways to make it work within my budget. Basically, would it be all that bad of a thing if I just used the stock pressure plate and upgraded the disc and flywheel? I'm new to this whole modifying thing. Please let me know what you think, as well as any recommendations on brands and whatnot. Thanks!
joel w. 11-19-2005, 01:14 PM i went with a stage 3 pressure plate and 6 puck disk, but i didnt like it, It was ok leaving the driveway but once it got warm, it chattered and made wierd noises.
so i pulled it apart again and left the stage 3 pressure plate and used a stock disk, and it is so nice now, my old disk wasnt bad at all, but the stock pressure plate was too weak and it would slip in 3rd, 4th and 5th. I have no slippage under boost and it doesnt chatter, very drivethru window friendly now... lol
oceanfire0 11-19-2005, 05:59 PM Cool, thanks for the info.
ma71supraturbo 11-20-2005, 01:46 PM Alledgedly the Spec stage 1-3 use remanufactured stock pressure plates. Stage 2+, 3+, 4, and 5 are certainly upgraded. This is not according to SPEC mind you...
joel w. 11-20-2005, 01:54 PM my stage 3 pressure plate on mine said toyota right on the casting, but the paper work issued says they used 30% heavier springs or fingers(clamping force)?. it feels harder to press the clutch in than the stocker.. i was worried about blowing out the master or slave cylinders but it does not seem to be an issue?
ma71supraturbo 11-21-2005, 11:25 PM Nah, you won't blow out a good master or slave with a SPEC ("primary" and "secondary" for the PC). My stage 2 feels 100% like stock even though the PP is "stronger." Most, if not all, of the aftermarket pressure plates will be a Toyota cast -- they just use heavier springs. Drive an RPS or ACT and you'll know the moment you push the pedal that the clutch isn't stock. The SPEC has a much lighter pedal (which is a good thing for daily driving -- and it still holds the power), but has raised some eyebrows with their claims of increased clamping force...
joel w. 11-21-2005, 11:43 PM cool jeff thanks for the info.. yes ive never been very (pc) been calling them that for 20 yrs... hahhaha... never even occured to me that its kinda racial..
i think i saw a vid on HPF's site with the clutch demo with lots of hp..... looks smooth
Suprattop 11-22-2005, 12:27 AM Just to throw in my $.02 worth here...
My '92T was originally an automatic. When the auto gave out, I did a 5spd conversion and went with an ACT 6-pick unsprung clutch. It had a very heavy clutch pedal and always chattered when taking off from a stop light. Was a major PITA during rush hour traffic!
I bought a Clutchmasters Stage 3 sprung-hub clutch a few years back, but never changed it until right before Vegas 2005!! OMFG, what a difference!!! The clutch pedal feels lighter than any stock clutch I've EVER driven!!! Even lighter than the Luk clutch I've got in my MK2!!!! And taking off from a stop is soooooooooo silky smooth!!!!! :headbang:
Can't believe I waited so long to change it out!!! :bonk:

I never thought about it either until I asked for one at a Sacramento auto parts store and got a look of disgust. I was just like :iono:
oceanfire0 11-23-2005, 11:37 AM So I take it that for daily driving and whatnot, that the SPEC would be the best option. What stage would you guys recommend? Also, I heard from a friend of mine that a lightweight flywheel will take away from my top-end power.... is that true? Thanks agian for the info.

I've never driven a Supra with the SPEC clutch, but the Clutchmasters I have in mine is awesome and would be excellent for daily driving.

A flywheel won't really give or take away horsepower, it just is a lighter component that will allow the engine to accelerate more quickly (rev freely). This will translate into slightly better acceleration, noticeably better revving and the downside of having to hold the rpm higher when leaving a line from a stop.
Between the Clutch masters and the SPEC, the clutch masters is the better driving clutch. The lower stages will drive closer to stock, the higher stages will hold more power. The idea is to get a clutch that will hold your power (and then some), but not to overdue it and pick an aggressive clutch unnecessarily.

I use the CM stg3 with a ss line. Holds 440rwhp/460tq fine, and as mentioned above, stock-like drivability. Recommended.
Good Luck with your choice.

ChrisB 11-24-2005, 08:48 PM I'd get the HPF Bronze with RPS pressure plate. Very smooth engagement, 25% stiffer pedal, and will hold a ton of power.
Chris.
oceanfire0 12-03-2005, 01:29 PM Awesome, thank you all for your help! Yeah, apparently he thought that by having a lighter flywheel that it would take away some of the top end power/momentum that these cars are known for. Doesn't really make any sense... I'll start saving my money then!
witeenigma 12-30-2005, 04:03 PM i'll just chime in a lil about my clutch experiences. i went w/ a TRD that i actually bought a few years back from Jeff Watson (champion toyota), with a stock disk. finally got it in about 6 months ago when i felt like my new setup was finally making the stocker give out. here's the few experiences i had with certain setups:
stock everything - nuff said.
stock FW, TRD clutch, street disk, aluminum driveshaft - very streetable, pulls easily
RPS FW, TRD clutch, ACT 6 puck disk, aluminum driveshaft - not very streetable until broken in, still chatters slightly even after break in... but i spin through 3rd.
i think the slightly less ability for street is ok for me. the power delivery is amazing!!
