: Help finding reputable engine sales
palmbay 11-05-2005, 08:28 PM I have a compresion problem with #1 cylinder, that means I dont have any, and it seems to be valves. So I think I will buy an engine, and build it mildly to replace mine. This is so the car is not down for too long. Any help or comments please.

palmbay 11-09-2005, 04:58 PM Hey that web site is great if I was doing an engine swap, I just want to replace mine. 7MGTE
palmbay 11-09-2005, 05:26 PM Maybe I should go into more depth as to the problems I am having and maybe yall will be able to help me better Please
Ok BHG 6 weeks ago and it took 4 weekends for me to do. I was waiting 2 weeks for parts though. Block ok, head milled .010. Install cometic metal head gasket, and all new gaskets for all the other stuff that came off. Also did tune up, and replace all vacume and coolant hoses.
All back together and it runs rough. Check compresion and cyl. #1 had 20 psi after like 10 cranks. I also found excesive oil on all the plugs. I have put about 150 miles on car since it was back together. Put oil into cyl. #1, and checked comp. again and same result. I am thinking I have an exhaust valve leak since the car does not back fire when running.
Now will I have to get a new MHG and other gaskets or will I be ok reinstalling the ones I have on now. Also is this something I can do myself or should I take it somewhere and if I take it somewhere can anyone recomend a good shop. I live in the Melbourne FL area. I have done a valve job on a 1931 Model A Ford, flat head 4 cyl. I have just finish restoring this car. Basicaly just lapped the valves and put it back together. I know that the 7mgte requires shims in the buckets but if I release the springs is it just simply lap the valves or is this simplicity just a pipe dream. This motor is the most complex I have ever worked on, and I am not anykind of mechanic just an electrician.
Thanks for all input and info anyone can give.
suprabad 11-10-2005, 06:37 AM You can probably re-use the metal head gasket (as long as you didn't f it up taking it out) but most of the other gaskets can only be used once with the exception of the cam cover gaskets.
ma71supraturbo 11-11-2005, 08:10 PM Rabid Chimp and titan both offer 7mgte's (titan as a short-block only IIRC).
shadowwolfsupra 12-01-2005, 01:09 PM damn, this is gonna take some serious thought. First off, that cometic head gasket, you shouldn't have used it due to that its somewhat of a flimsy head gasket compared to the HKS and Greddy. Also, I think it would be best if you change the gasket again because of warpage and also expansion from heat. Beside that, its a very possible chance that it could be the exhaust valve however if you really want to find out, you are gonna have to take the head off from the block and inspect the valves. If there is play in it both wiggling it and pushing it up and down, the you most likely need new valves or as you said, time for a new motor. Check if anything else might be loose or broken while you are at it, sometimes that could also be the problem. Oh and by the way, are you using the 7m n/a cams on your exhaust side of your head? If you are, then I would highly suggest you take it off and put the stock on back in. For some reason, ever since some people have been doing that mod, they are usually the ones that would end up in these problems. I don't know if anybody agrees with me but I prefer to use the stock bump sticks instead of using those damn n/a ones. Let me know how it goes when you take off the head, tell me if you see anything that might be out of place.
palmbay 12-03-2005, 09:18 PM Thanks for the great replys, thought I would update. When I took the head off I didnt put the shims and buckets back in the right locations. So last weekend did a valve job. Ends up I had 6 valves not closing all the way. Got all the clearences right and the car runs great now. Purs like a kitten, and no ticking from the top end. I have never done a job like this before and I have learned agreat deal. If it weren't for all the great info I found on sites like this, I would have given up in defeat. Anyway thanks

What are you basing this statement on? Cometic makes some of the best multi layer steel gaskets in the business and there are many 1000+ hp cars whose owners would SWEAR by them. Not to mention the countless 400+ hp 7mgte's that run with them.
shadowwolfsupra 12-05-2005, 02:43 PM I understand but for some reason, when i tried out my cometic gasket, it blew on me within 500miles of driving. I don't know if maybe the guy that sold it to me sold me a used one or one that was defected but ever since I had that problem, I only grew to trust the HKS and greddy gaskets. I hope I seriously didn't offended anyone that has that gasket, i was just pointing out an opinion, and if I did offend someone, i am trully sorry.
kamil 12-05-2005, 02:54 PM A backstory like that to accompany your opinion goes a long way when posting online! Without explaining why your opinion is what it is, its very easy to mislead people. Your situation could have been affected by several other factors including the one you mentioned; receiving the gasket second-hand from another person. I'm a firm believer in not talking smack about a product without solid evidence and without trying to be rude, there are thousands of successful cometic installs to your failed one.
With that said, cometic makes a very dependable metal headgasket thats been proven many times. As with any metal gasket, it is less tolerable than a stock composite but with proper surface prep and installation procedures it will hold true. Check http://www.supramania.com/ if you don't believe me :)
palmbay 12-05-2005, 03:26 PM In my opinion the cometic head gasket is great. I am not the best mechanic, with that being said I could have screwed up any number of other parts on my supra in the whole BFG process. As soon as I corrected the valves, my compresion is great, and I put over 1000 miles with out cyl #1. I also turned up the boost to 12lb, after the replacement and, as ignorent as I am, I took it to the drag strip like that. I think if the gasket was less than par, the abuse I have put on it would have been too much. I now have 3000 on the new gasket. This car is great.
shadowwolfsupra 12-08-2005, 03:42 PM ok, you guys have a point and I want to appologize. I did find out that you guys might not want to buy any and I mean ANY gaskets from HP motoring here in Miami. Found out that I was just not the only one that had that problem with the gasket. I found out that the those guys where selling used gaskets that where just not enough from holding anything at all. The web site is www.highperformanceonline.com . If you guys can, avoid ordering anything from that site since you guys might get screwed over by them. Also because of them, a total of three mk3's and one mk4 are temporarily out of comission due to a number of problems that they faced from build up by them. Even though they specialize on mr2's and other specific cars, they just don't know how to work on our cars. Once again, I apologize from saying anything about the gasket and keep in mind to stay away from that shop that i mentioned above. Talk to you all later.
