After 11 years of boosting I have decided to take the engine out and inspect / replace some OEM stuff.

I do have a repair manual, but it tells me to remove the starter, PS pump, alternator, etc.

Do I really have to remove them in order to take the engine out of the car?

Any other hints or tips when removing the engine?

Been on there for 4 years. Searched there and didn't find anything to answer my questions.

Maybe this might help building the FAQ on TSF.com :eusa_sile

i pulled my motor twice in the past 2 months u only have to remove the air conditioning u could leave it but than u have to have it recharged. i recommend pulling the tranny with the engine um passing the wiring harness threw the firewall is a breese. any other questions feel free to ask

here are some hints;

remove large starter battery cable and ground cables on the driver side of the block
remove alternator cable on passengerside
pull wire harness thru wall and lay it on the engine
pull engine with tranny; unbolt driveshaft from tranny yoke, or the front half of the DS will slide out of the center support.
Evacuate the AC system and unbolt the 2 AC lines from the compressor
remove the engine fan BEFORE touching any of the acessory belts
Leave DP on if its easier to unbolt from mid pipe
Unbolt the clutch slave cyl from tranny, do NOT disconnect slave line.

if you need anything else, post up.

I can't seem to get a break from work to put my hands on the car. Thanks guys for the hints.

It's almost ready to be taken out.

I have to work on the harnass though, I have a Microtech installed on the harnass, unless I install removable terminals, but it's going to be a bitch.

Now, do you have to tilt the car? i.e. have the car on front jack stands in order to take the engine+tranny out?

You could of alittle time, if you removed the AC by removing the torx studs instead of redoing the lines. You have to remove the front radiator/fan ect for more room. Remove the PS steering, competely remove the exhaust.. you can leave the turbo/intake manifold on it...

you just need to put blocks or something under the car, so the cherry picker will fit under the car. Pull and lift the motor out alittle bit at a time.

Its a pretty easy process. good luck

actually, a little more elaboration on the block thing; roll you car onto a a pair of 2x8's stacked on top of eachother. this will gain you about 4" of height, even on a lowered car. this helped us out immensley when doing the dp/exhaust, filter relocation and entire fuel system.

You don't need to disconnect the A/C or the power steering pump. Just unbolt them and leave them hanging. If you disconnect them (especially the A/C), it makes it a pain later. The advice of pulling the harness through the firewall is the ideal way. It makes it very easy. Take the fan off, but leave everything else intact. I prefer to leave the tranny on, but when you do, you'll need a friend to angle the motor when you're pulling it out so it will clear the tunnel. I just unbolt the driveshaft. I can literally get a motor out in about an hour taking my time. I then just use an impact wrench and take everything off while it's on the cherry picker or a motor stand.

Chris.

DO you guys ever disconnect the motor mounts from the block to get the engine+tranny out. I did it twice and both time end up with a little clearence issue. disconnect those and every thing just slips right out.

I unbolt the 2 large nuts from the bottom, then lift the motor out.
