Can someone explain step by step how to remove the power steering belt? The last time I removed it all I used were scissors ;) so I need to know how to properly remove it without damaging the belt. I should have all the tools to do the job and all the knowledge, but I've never tightened or removed a belt before. I imagine I have to remove the alternator belt as well to get the power steering belt off, so I'll need instructions on how to do that also.

Thank you

And also, I read about how looping the lines will make the steering easier since you're not fighting the fluid through the pump and rack. Is this true? If so do I just loop the lines and that's it?

From memory, the air conditioning belt is the outermost belt (and I believe you don't have that anymore). You shouldn't need to remove the alternator belt. I haven't checked out the NA's system that closely, but there should be a screw-type tensioner on the powersteering bracket. Basically look for something that would adjust the distance of the Powersteering pump's pulley from the crankshaft. There will be a locknut you will need to loosen, then you should be able to turn the screw/barrel adjuster to bring the powersteering pump in closer to the block -- creating slack in the powersteering belt.

If there is not a screw-type adjustment, then look for a idler/tensioner pulley somewhere in the powersteering belt's path...

^ sorry...A bit of bad info up there.

I did all my belts on Sat. Remove the a/c belt, if you have it, by using a 14mm box wrench and loosen the center nut on the tensioner pulley. Then use a 14mm socket and long extension with ratchet and loosen the bolt that lowers the pully enough to remove belt. (note...loosen means a couple of turns only)

Next use a 14mm box wrench, and a 14mm open-end wrench and loosen the pivot bolt on the alternator. Next use a 12mm socket and ratchet to loosen the locking bolt on the adjustment assy. Now use a short 10mm open-end wrench to lower down the alternator until the belt will come off.
(tip...spray some wd40 on those threads and the 10mm nut will move by hand when you lift the alternator up a bit by hand)

Now the hard part. Lying on your back in front of the passenger front tire, feel for the pivot bolt that goes thru the bracket and bottom part of the power steering pump. Use a 14mm box wrench to loosen it. Then up top use a 14mm socket and short extention with ratchet to loosen the bolt that holds the p/s pump belt tight in position. The pump will now be able to move inward, toward the center of the engine, pivoting on the loosened bottom bolt.

I had to CAREFULLY use a prybar to move the pump in enough to r & r the belt, as the hoses and stuff are 'spring-loading' it a bit to keep it from moving inward easily.

Upon re-assy...Make sure you have the belts on properly, and in the right grooves.

Install all belts in reverse order.
