: Firewall sound deadener

How far up the firewall does it go? I still have the black mats on the firewall and the sound deadener is removed up to that point. Any clue on how much weight will be saved by removing the black mats and getting all the rest of the sound deadener out?

Thanks

A few pounds, but if you're already gutted there isn't much reason to stop. My sound deadener went about 1/2-way up the firewall and also went over the transmission tunnel.

Just out of curiousity, are you using the blow-dryer and chisel method, or dry-ice method (or something totally different)?

Hammer and a screw driver :(. I shove it under then pull the screwdriver back out, then do the same from a different location a few times and then pull it up. It works well to get out big pieces so I can't complain.

It just seems like it will be a lot of work to remove the black mat from the firewall. I already got the transmission tunnel, all I have left is the firewall behind the huge black mat.

I thought your dashboard was out?

It is, but the black mat looks to be connected by bolts and clips and I'll have to remove the wiring harness from the holder to remove the mat.

Not yet. There's nowhere close to me that I know of where I can weigh it.

Do you have a local waste transfer station? They usually weigh you coming in/out so they know how much trash you dumped... Just drive on the scales and look at the number...

The closest one is ~25 mins away. Maybe I'll stop by tomorrow.

I'd love to hear the results.

The tar goes clear up into the dash.

I didnt weigh all of mine when I took it out. However I seem to remeber someone else weighing all that crap and it was ~30? pounds for the whole car.

FYI the sound deadener only goes up like 1 1/2 - 2 inches behind the black mat. It does NOT go up the firewall, if you pull up the black mat you can see it barely extends past there.

I still plan on removing the black mats and what's left of the sound deadener, it's going to be a PITA, gotta drop the wheel, remove the bar, remove the wiring harness, ecu, pedals, etc. But knowing me I'll just cut through it and pull it out, I really don't feel like removing all that for maybe 10 lbs of weight reduction, but I want that 10 lbs gone ;)

Yea beats me, there was only like an additional 1 1/2 - 2 inches of sound deadener behind the mat. I'm glad, makes my job easier :p

Yep, mine went up a good 6 inches past the black mat.
