: progress pics from my swap
Turbo-Joe 09-22-2005, 10:12 PM since this is a new forum, i thought id post pics of my engine swap from start to finish to help break in this section of the forum :snork_win
i always wanted a 1JZ engine since I read about them and did alot of research. i was pretty much fascinated with it and told myself whenever i had the chance to do the swap, i would take it. the opportunity presented itself this past december. my car was at home all of last school year while i was away at college. this made it alot easier to do a swap and not have to worry about needing my car to get to work or a job or anything.
So i put my 7M up for sale. i sold basically everything in my engine bay. the engine, harness, intercooler, tranny, driveshaft, all the mods. etc etc. one person bought the whole 7M setup up mostly stock except for an HKS downpipe. im happy to say i got a call from this person a couple weeks ago, and my 7M is still running strong and he's had no issues. so take that, everyone who thinks people who swap to a JZ just had bad 7Ms or couldnt take care of them.
anyway. on with the pictures. this was the start of my 1JZ swap adventure. the man behind all the madness was jose(onebad7M) who helped my take the 7M out of my car AND swap it over to the car of the person who bought it AND he also did my 1JZ swap as well. the first part of my little adventure took place over spring break when i arranged for the buyer to have his car towed to my house the week before and my parents were kind enough to let him store his car beside my own in our garage. then when i got home from college for spring break, jose and I got to work (me mostly being a helpful extra set of hands  ) and heres some pictures from this part.
the car receiving my GTE was a red 86 with a rodknocked 7MGE.

here is my car with the 7M-GTE being pulled out of the engine bay

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/Turbo-Joe/Springbreakswap20006.jpg
my GTE went into the red car in better condition than when it came out of my car. jose took it upon himself to take care of some some small things that he didnt have to. such as rewrapping the wiring harness so its not all crispy anymore, replacing the dying starter, replacing some IC hoses, and some other things i cant remember
and here is what my engine bay looks like after the engine came out. really really dirty!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/Turbo-Joe/Springbreakswap20007.jpg
i made it a point to really clean up the engine bay before my future 1JZ would be dropped in. :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/Turbo-Joe/Springbreakswap20011.jpg
the rodknocked GE that came out of the red car had to sit in my garage for a while as we had no way to dispose of it at the time. thankfully my parents were patient enough with me to let it sit in the garage until it could be moved

After the first swap was all done it was good to have a big chunk of cash to use to pay for my 1JZ, but it was kind of an empty feeling because all the work was done and i sacrificed my spring break to make it happen, but my car was empty still. :( before i went back to school though, i took my cash from selling my 7M and went to mike urbano(RIP) to purchase some parts i would need for my 1JZ. I had him build me a new wiring harness and i also bought a new stock 1JZ radiator, and some maintence parts like cam seals and valve cover gaskets.
so i was half way to having my 1J done. 7m out of the car, part 1 over!
Turbo-Joe 09-22-2005, 10:39 PM TIME FOR PART 2!! 1JZ TIME  :eyebulge:
So I went back to school to and kept searching for a good 5spd 1JZ clip to buy for my car. unfortunately for me, clips were kind of in high demand and low supply at the time, so i missed out on a few clips that i could have bought, but its ok. After a few months of searching for clips, jose gave me a call and let me know there was a 5spd JZA70 clip that would be in the US in about 3 weeks or so. I was very excited to hear the goodnews. and sure enough 3 weeks later on the last day of school before i was leaving while i was packing up and getting ready to leave school to go back home for the summer, i got a call letting me know my clip had finally arrived. He sent me pics and a few details about the clip for me.
this was a picture taken of my JZA70 clip fresh off the boat waiting for me to come get it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/Turbo-Joe/freshofftheboat.jpg
The next day when i got home from school, the first thing I did was go pay for the clip.
the following week I went with jose to dismantle the clip so we could have just the engine and a box of everything needed stripped off the clip instead of having the whole damn clip sitting at my house.
after the engine was taken out i had some fun and took a pic with my empty clip :D the clip actually had an authentic gracer bumper but it was pretty much trashed. but thats ok anyway. jose also pressure washed the engine while we were there to get the coat of dirt and grime off the engine from transit from japan

Turbo-Joe 09-22-2005, 10:39 PM the next day the engine and my box-o-1JZ parts arrived. i was so happy :headbang:

It turned out I got pretty lucky on this clip. it had alot of really nice addins. I got a TRD flywheel, trust intake, Stealth ECU, and some other nic nacs like blue bulbs for my dash to match my car instead of the green stock ones and a few other small things i cant remember right now. :snork_sho
the rest of the day consisted of preparing the car and the engine and transmission to be dropped in. this meant draining all the fluids out of the engine and transmission and cleaning up the engine bay a little more while i had the opportunity. I also went to pick up my wiring harness and radiator that night so we would have them when they were needed.
for the next few days the swap took place. Jose and another socalsupra friend, Aaron, got to work on dropping in the motor while I cleaned basically most of the parts off the engine that would come off easily. intake manifold, PS resevoir, fan shroud, fan blades, etc etc.
here is my engine bay nice and cleaned up and ready for its new heart

-TRD flywheel
-Stealth ECU
-MKIV TT wheels
-Bilstein shocks w/H&R front springs and Twin turbo R rear springs

Turbo-Joe 09-22-2005, 10:46 PM Looks good, nice work! Sounds like you've got some cool parents too...
thanks :)
If theres anyone to thank the most, it's them. they were patient with me occupying the garage with two supras at one time for about 2 weeks and also with my engine and my car in the garage at the same time. and just allowing me to do the swap, period.
Brewster 09-25-2005, 08:43 PM I will definately make sure to clean my engine and bay when I get them.
Loki89t 09-25-2005, 10:29 PM You should give me your exhuast Joe, you don't need it :)
I gotta remember to clean my engine bay when I pull my motor, it's all dirty :(
SupraMan1784 10-13-2005, 12:25 PM i dint see that this part of the forum existed...but i gotta say thats pretty much how my process went also..though urs seems to have gone pretty smoothly...mine had some tough times...but yea once you get it in... its nice even though it took a while to get the motor in...it still makes for a sweet ride
Turbo-Joe 10-13-2005, 01:32 PM thanks:wub: the 1J swap isnt hard when you have 1JZ ninjas like jose and aaron at driftmotion working for you
SupraMan1784 10-13-2005, 02:01 PM damn your lucky...u got ninjas...all i had was me and a friend and a mechanic that let me use his lift and engine hoist...me and my friend basically did all the labor but we had the mechanic do the harness...kind of complicated and i dint wanna lose myself in that task...i need to get ninjas
Brewster 10-14-2005, 01:42 AM Come beginning of Nov. I will be 1jz powered
Loki89t 10-14-2005, 12:28 PM If I had the money to buy this NA '89 I looked at I'd be going 1JZ in it, but no money :(
V8KillinSupra 10-16-2005, 02:23 PM Very nice. I want to get me a 1JZ someday.
kurisu 10-16-2005, 05:43 PM werd. Nice write joe!
like he said, its not really that hard to drop in. Just all the wiring that needs to be done. gets hectic after awhile. but you should have blacked out all your piping! :P
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/kurisu338/IMG_1517.jpg
but omg, its such a good feeling when you first start it up! :tweetz:
SupraMan1784 10-16-2005, 10:27 PM yea ill agree to that...especially when everything runs smoothly the first time around and there are no problems...theres like this big weight that gets lifted off your shoulders...makes u feel real nice
Turbo-Joe 10-16-2005, 10:58 PM definately. my car cranked right up the first time. that was nice. nothing needed to be rewired or adjusted.
SupraMan1784 10-17-2005, 06:43 AM yea...ur just glad all the work was done correctly...and that no one f'ed up thats all...if i had to wait another day i woudla been heartbroken :brokenhea
The Great Tougini 12-04-2005, 01:35 PM damn i cant wait to get rid of this NA motor!
i want a 1jz if possible too... i am from socal (alhambra to be exact) but im going to school in santa cruz. ive seen some of the other pics on this site and i was like holy shit thats the 10 fwy!!! omgwtfbbq! so yeah. approx how much did the swap cost, and all that stuff... b/c im gonna be saving up money for this. i need more power!!! im probably making about 180 hp and even less at the wheels! gah.
thanks
Loki89t 12-04-2005, 02:39 PM This is what I think of Joe's 1JZ

Loki89t 12-24-2005, 12:07 PM i dont care what you think about joes 1jz... i want a 1jz
I have no hate for the 1J, I plan to build a 1J car someday.
Brewster 12-24-2005, 01:55 PM lies
The Great Tougini 01-09-2006, 04:14 PM i am at a critical junction... should i put a get a new head gasket put on the supra, or should i wait a long while, sell the 7m(n/a) and buy a 1jz front clip, or fix it and get rid of the supra and buy a miata? which would be better in reliability, and ultimately cost less? keep in mind that im a student with limited resources? i like the supra and i love the way it handles, but i like the idea of having a convertible. this car wont be my daily driver but i want to be able to get back on the road and enjoy it with the most amount of money in my checking acct.
thoughts, suggestions, things i should and shouldnt do/ watch out for, would be greatly appreciated.
~Ian
Brewster 01-10-2006, 04:20 PM For a 1JZ/5spd swap budget around $4000-4500. If you live close to an importer and tow the clip home yourself then you could do it for less.
The Great Tougini 01-11-2006, 10:58 PM thanks for the info. that is what im looking to spend on a miata. somewhere in the 4-6k range. i dont know what to do... i think i may non-op it and put it in storage until i have enough money saved up for the swap. do any of you feel the same way about your supras, or anycar you are working on/ building up?
Turbo-Joe 01-12-2006, 12:42 AM if its worth it to you, and you're really motivated to to meet your goals for the car and the finances just aren't working I'd just put it away for awhile
these cars dont always make the best daily drivers so it's not always the best idea to rely on them as your only car, but some of us do. like me :P
im at a point with my car where i completely trust it to be reliable for me to go from home to school, school to work, work to home about 80ish miles a day, every day... and at the same time still fun and fast
Duffy 10-18-2006, 08:16 PM I logged in here just to say GOOD JOB on the 1JZ engine swap and thanks for all the pics and inspiration. I've been thinking of replacing the oil oozing
5mge in my 82 supra with a 7mgte and this has give me the inspiration to do so. What a bunch of awesome guys. Very impressive!!!!
Anyone ever put this motor into mark II????
:headbang:
Suprafast0422 11-19-2006, 09:32 PM looks awesome, ill probably be doing this in a few years:bow:
supramacist 11-19-2006, 09:37 PM yea ill agree to that...especially when everything runs smoothly the first time around and there are no problems...theres like this big weight that gets lifted off your shoulders...makes u feel real nice
That's why I'm thinking 350z

dizahl 11-21-2006, 06:47 PM mike the nissan forums are over there:getout: like i have any room to talk.:snork_abe
supramacist 11-21-2006, 08:27 PM How about the porsche forums, cause now I'm thinking 911 carrera s
Suprafast0422 11-22-2006, 01:20 PM How about the porsche forums, cause now I'm thinking 911 carrera s
:eusa_snoo :getout:
:D
supramacist 11-22-2006, 08:17 PM watchout suprafast, I still have a supra. If dizahl doesn't buy it I'll work on it slow. But I'm not planning on keeping it. I have the upper head gasket kit and the head had been rebuilt by the machine shop. YOu pay for the head, and 500 bucks for the car and it's yours.
I am currently stuck between the porsche cayman s and the 911 carrers s. 70k to 96k difference. The caymans sweet and it's small outside but it's not inside. So we are thinking porsche. There is no substitute.
Suprafast0422 11-23-2006, 02:08 PM What year is it, how much is the head? I didnt mean nothin btw just givin ya a hard time.
