Just curious to see if anyone had an idea about what could be going on. I have a 1987 Supra Turbo, 5 speed, and it sometimes has a misifre at idle, but more notably sometimes it has a dead spot between about 4500 and 5000 rpm, before and after that its fine. Recently I've put new spark plugs an wires in it, as well as changed the valve cover gaskets and spark plug seals. Also, sometimes when I get into it it smells like gas for a minute or 2 inside. I'm thinking maybe a fuel filter or O2 sensor. Anyone have any other suggestions?

hey what do u mean missed fired it hesitate?????? skips??? more info please

check your spark gap man, make sure theres a ground to the coil pack, check timing, and yes last thing is to unplug your 02 sensor see if it does anything, also check AFM

good luck

Yeah, just a hesitation, like fuel cuts out, and only occasionally, more so when the car is warmed up. Spark plug gap is fine, the coil pack has a good ground, I'll check timing tomorrow at work, along with the O2 sensor. Thanks for the help.

Have you checked codes?

Check Engine light isnt on, but in any case I don't have a code reader for it. Good idea though.

You do not need a code reader, just a paperclip or a piece of wire...

To check codes:

* Have engine off and make sure AC switch is off.

* Short terminals "T" and "E1" in the diagnostic port (its a small squarish box by the fuse box near the battery). The underside of the lid has a diagram labeling each port...

* Turn the key to "on" but do not start the car.

* Count the number of blinks on the check engine light. If there is a short pause, then more blinking that is a double-digit number (blink blink *pause* blink blink blink would be code 23). If there is a long pause, that separates two codes (blink blink * pause* blink blink blink *pause* *pause* blink blink blink *pause* blink blink -- code 23 and code 32)

Thanks! I'll test this during lunch today. Let you know what I find.

Well, jumped the wire from E1 to T, like you said, and it worked. The ony problem is I didn't get any codes back. So, at this point, since it hasn't done it lately, I'm not gonna worry about it. Thanks for the info.

Did it just flash on/off on/off over and over with no pauses?

It did do that, is it not supposed to?

That just confirms that you had no codes... Hmm, I'd check the ground on the coilpack, double-check all the vacume and intake hoses and if that doesnt work, I'd check compression

Alright then, I really should check compression anyway. Its still got relatively low miles (131,000 on an '87), but who knows what it went through before I got it. I know its got a valve tick right now, and I'm hoping my eyes were just playing tricks on me, but when I pulled off my oil filter for the last oil change, I swore I saw small metal flakes coming out. Not out of the pan, just the oil filter.

Oh yeah, I did notice when I replaced the valve cover gaskets that the two short hoses from the valve cover to the pipe behind the intake manifold (3000 pipe) were in pretty rough shape... could that have anything to do with it? Hopefully you can understand what I'm talking about, lol.

I would watch that closely because we all thought my car had a valvetrain noise when my stock 7mge ended up throwing a rod

Thanks everyone for the input, I finally fixed the problem on friday! I finished up the full tune-up by replacing my fuel filter. By the way it fought me coming off, I think it probably hadn't been changed in a couple years, cuz after I put the new one on, it ran like it never has before. No hesitation, starts up easier, and pulls harder. I think the old filter was probably just so clogged I wasn't getting any fuel.

Yep...that'll do it every time !! So...everyone reading this that has not done so within the last year, or 20k miles needs to get their fuel filter changed right away. Hey, $20 is worth it !!

Mine was doing the exact same thing as this thread starter's car. I had already done everything under the hood when I did the headgasket back in May. I've had the car 3 years (30k miles) and never changed it cause its ran so good. Well that fuel filter was very, very dirty. It just 'poured' crap out of it. Quess what?? No more miss, smooth acceleration, more power. It was a bitch to crack the lines loose !!

Lol, the lines on mine fought me for about 10 minutes each, too.

Had me thinking here...Glad you got it fixed!!!
