1st and foremost, remove the hood. It makes it tons easier to see and get to everything and obviously needs to be gone for the engine hoist/ cherry picker.

2nd, disconnect the battery (make sure your windows/sunroof are closed) and drain all your fluids; coolant, engine oil, transmission oil (it's easier, especially on a manual tranny car to remove the engine/tranny as one) and power steering (or you can pull it off to the side if you're putting a new engine into the car you're pulling the engine out of...)

3rd, remove the lower part of the intake (or all, doesn't matter)... fan shroud, skidplate (if you still have it, ha), cooling fan, and the radiator.

4th, remove the ground wires from the engine block, intake to body, etc. Then remove all necessary water hoses, vaccum lines (to charcoal canister and brake booster, etc.)

5th, undo the wiring harness. Now, depending on what exactly you're doing you can do this two ways... you can either undo the upper intake manifold and pull the injector wiring and then all other wiring connected to the engine, OR you can unplug it from the ECU and push it through the firewall (which I found to be equally a pain)...don't forget to unplug the wires from the alternator and starter.

6th, undo the speedo cable and any other wires that look attached to something down there...ha

7th, undo the fuel lines and remove the slave cylinder (if working with a M/T car>

8th, unbolt the downpipe from the exhaust manifold, then the exhaust manifold from the head.

9th, unbolt the motor mounts. remove the driveshaft from the rear differential and then unbolt the tranny mount (making sure you have a jack underneath to support it)

http://photobucket.com/albums/v237/TanyasMkII/swap/th_trannyin.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/TanyasMkII/swap/trannyin.jpg)

10th, hook up the engine hoist/cherry picker to the stock engine pulling brackets...slowly start pulling the engine making sure the engine/tranny are positioned properly and that you're not caught on anything.

http://photobucket.com/albums/v237/TanyasMkII/swap/th_comingout.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/TanyasMkII/swap/comingout.jpg)

http://photobucket.com/albums/v237/TanyasMkII/swap/th_out2.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/TanyasMkII/swap/out2.jpg)

http://photobucket.com/albums/v237/TanyasMkII/swap/th_exhaustin.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/TanyasMkII/swap/exhaustin.jpg)

And there you go... any steps I may have missed will become apparent along the way, this is why you should hoist the engine slowly and carefully, checking often for any wires, hoses, etc that may still be hooked up.
Installation is basically the reverse of the removal.

Very good post!!! I'd suggest having a freind help with the hoisting so you can make sure you don't bang the engine into the firewall or upper radiator support
