Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda has confirmed his desire to develop a successor to the iconic Toyota Supra, but has also warned Supra fanboys against getting their hopes up. In an open forum with journalists in Japan, Toyoda said that while he "wants to see the next Supra tested in the near future," it's unlikely considering Toyota's current situation.
Toyoda did say that he would like to build a new sports car, "that is better than the Supra," which is a good thing in our minds, because to say the last-gen model was a tad on the hefty side would be a gross understatement.
Instead, Toyota will focus on a return to quality, and on building the FR-S/FT-86 compact sports car, which has reportedly been delayed due to development issues.
Back in the early 2000's, when import and sport compact drag racing was hitting the main spotlight, several race teams were experimenting with Toyota's Supra 2JZ-GTE powerplant. Whether it was in their Pro RWD drag car or their Street Tire class Supras, the 2JZ seemed to be the engine to beat when it came to making plenty of reliable horsepower. Even today, Titan Motorsports has shown just how great the 2JZ can be in their Scion tC drag car which is currently lapping 3's in the 1/8th-mile repeatedly.
What many didn't know however were that those same teams were also experimenting with other Toyota powerplants, perhaps to find a leg up on their competition. We promised we'd follow up on the Toyota Supra 2JZ-Powered Ford Mustang of Jaw's Gear and Axle and we finally have some results in. Recently the vehicle was taken to Bakersfield for the SCE Summer Nationals at Famoso Raceway with no prior testing. Weighing in at 3,530 lbs, Jaw's Gear and Axle opted to race in two different classes in order to get in as many runs as possible hoping to dial-in their Ford Mustang hybrid.
Their qualifying efforts required a lot of fine-tuning and tweaking, but they settled in on the first night with a fastest time of 9.630 @ 145.93 mph. They knew they had a lot more in the car and that an 8-second pass was surely possible before the weekend of racing was over. Through some luck, they were able to make some rounds in order to continue competing with their Mustang, netting a new time of 9.159 @ 157.45 mph in the second round.
